The penalty taking role has generated a lot of attention at Real Madrid this season, based on how it’s handled. Contrary to the past years, when Ronaldo, Ramos and Benzema have all been main takers respectively, there’s a completely different ideology on that aspect at the club today.
Owing to this, Spanish newspaper Marca, has shed light on the situation, clearing any doubts amongst the Madrid faithfuls.
The players decide who to take
At the beginning of the season, a majority of the fans believed Vinicius Jr was the defined taker. This was owed to the fact that he stepped up to take the teams first penalty of the season vs las Palmas.
However, there was a twist, when the Brazilian let Mbappe shoot from the spot vs Real Betis. This came after Mbappe had already scored the lone goal of the game in the 67th minute, and Madrid had a penalty in the 76th minute which Vinicius let him shoot for his second despite not having scored on the night yet.
Things were again changed against Real sociedad, when Real Madrid were awarded two penalties in the match. Vinicius took the first in the 58th minute, and let Mbappe take the second in the 75th minute. With both scoring.
Most recently on Tuesday against Stuttgart, there was another twist, owing to Bellingham’s return. Real Madrid were initially awarded a penalty, and although it was later overruled, Bellingham was the man set to take, not Mbappe nor Vinicius.
After carefully studying this, marca has come up with the report that there’s no defined taker at the club. The players decide on the pitch, depending on the situation.
Carlo Ancelotti himself recently made a similar statement, when he said he trusted his players to decide.
In the four penalties Real Madrid has won this season, Mbappe and Vinicius have taking 2 each. Both players have a 100% record from the spot.
Now the question is; will we see Rodrygo take a few too?. The Brazilian is amongst the big guns at the club, and it’s only fair he gets a go from the spot as well.
