Xabi Alonso has just seen-out his first game as a Real Madrid manager in a disappointing 1-1 draw against Al Hilal. Dominated in the first 30 minutes, Gonzalo Garcia opened scoring in the 33 minute after a superb counter attack. However, the lead would be short lasting as Al Hilal converted a first half penalty making it 1-1.
The Merengues started the second half on some strong foot, with Arda Guler hitting the post minutes after coming on. The highlight of the half came deep in the second half, with Fede Valverde missing a 92’ minute penalty to win it.
All in all, it was a much better second half compared to the first for the Los Blancos.
Positives from tonight’s game
Not so much to take home tonight except for the confidence shown by the academy stars. Gonzalo Garcia was author of Madrid’s only goal and was voted superior player of the match. Victor Munoz seemed very electric and confident after replacing Vinicius Jr.
Another positive was new signing Huijsen, who looked quite settled. He installed himself as the main figure in defense, slowing the opposition’s press with his calm head. Other signing Trent did good, but for his standard, the expectations are high.
What must be improved from today’s performance?
Talking about possible improvements, we have to directly address the attackers. Disastrous performance from Rodrygo, and one to forget for Vinicius Jr. This must improve if the team wants to stand any chances of competing against the greats.
The midfield certainly needs a lot of touch in the creative department, as you get the feeling strikers don’t get the right ball. Sometimes runs are waisted, free players not spotted and easy decisions made a lot more difficult.
However, this is just the start of a new era. surely things can’t get worse than this. The team greatly missed Mbappe today and hopefully they improve on his return. After suffering a fever, it’s left to be seen if he makes it in time for the next group stage game.
