This decision is 100% the club’s.

As per COPE, new head coach Xabi Alonso had nothing whatsoever to do with this decision. Infact, the news 2 days ago which claimed Modric was staying, insisted that this was on Alonso’s demands.

Having played with Modric back during his Real Madrid days, Alonso admires the maestro a whole lot, and had planned to count on him for next season. He personally requested that Modric be given the new contract extension, one that would see him play at the club above 40.

However, the final decision was always up to the club. The player had waited this entire time, and did not receive any offer from the club. They decided to go the other way, and call it a day with one of their greatest legends.
