Real Madrid faced Real sociedad earlier tonight at the Reale Arena on match day 5 of LaLiga 2024/25 season. Once more it was not a convincing display from Carlo Ancelotti and his boys, who were saved only by two penalties.

Indeed, two second half goals from Vinicius Jr and kylian Mbappe, all from the spot sealed three points for madrid.

First half summary

It was a very sleepy first half for Real Madrid all-round. They lost possession too many times, and were lucky not to have conceded atleast two or three goals in the half.

Indeed, Thibaut Courtois was invited to make a save just barely over 100 seconds into the encounter. The hosts were also quite unlucky, as they hit the post twice in the opening 45 minutes.

Kylian Mbappe looked the only life-wire in attack for Real Madrid, boosted by the arrival of Rodrygo. An injury to Brahim Diaz meant he couldn’t continue, and the Brazilian was introduced, but failed to impress in the half.

Vinicius Jr, as always tried taking on players 1v1, but truth be told it was not one of those Big nighs for him. The first half ended in a 0-0 scoreline, however with sociedad looking the most dangerous.

Second half summary

The second half started with yet another big chance missed by the host. Just seconds into the half, for the third time on the game, sociedad hit the post from close range.

Real Madrid slowly began walking their way into the game, but failed to create enough chances.

The breakthrough however, came 13 minutes into the half. A shot from outside the box by young Arda Güler hit the open arm of the opponent far from a natural position.

Owing to the penalty, Vinicius Jr stepped-up and dispatched from the spot, putting the visitors in front. After a spell of dominance, another chance will present Itself  yet again, as Vinicius was fouled in the box.

Owing to the second penalty, Vinicius Jr showed great gesture as he let Mbappe shoot, scoring his third goal in LaLiga. Both penalties sealed the win for los blancos.

However, despite the win, Real Madrid’s performance must be highlighted as poor, with massive improvements required.

Kylian Mbappe was man of the match on the night, this making his second in a row.
