As the saying goes “the attack wins you games, the defense wins you titles ”, the defensive depth of a squad plays a key role in the teams hopes of winning silver Ware.
Heading into a new season, Europes top clubs are usually stacked with defenders, especially in the CB position, but that is not the case with Real Madrid this season.
Real Madrid’s defensive depth
At Real Madrid, the CB department comprises of the least number of players as the club gears up for a long and demanding season.
The club, had put all their eggs in one basket when they decided to sign LILLE’S young defensive prospect, LENY YORO. A move to Manchester united, who offered almost triple what the merengues were offering meant the club had to start all over again in the scouting process, for a defender who fits the “Real Madrid profile”.
Despite being short staffed in the defensive department, the club however, has witnessed some exits in that department of the field from the club this summer, with names like: Rafa Marin (Napoli) and Nacho (Al Quadsiah) all hitting the exit doors.
Ancelotti’s comment on new CB signing
Earlier today, while speaking in his customary pre-match press conference, ahead of Real Valladolid’s clash on Sunday at the Bernabéu, Ancelotti, received a handful of questions from the press, with one of them asking:
“is it not risky not to sign a CB?”
The manager, without any hesitation or thinking even for a split second replied:
“Our market is OVER, We have good players. Ascensio, Jacobo and Tchouameni that can help.” said Ancelotti. ( Via/ the Madrid zone)
With just over a week till the transfer market slams shot, Ancelotti’s comment highlights his trust in his current squad, with the manager also holding the versatility of players like Tchouaméni in high esteem.
It’s also worth mentioning that one of Real Madrid’s top defensive prospect, David Alaba could be with the team as early as October, after suffering an ACL injury in December of last year. Initial reports even stated the Austrian international could begin on-field training within the next two weeks.
With the currently being just two fully fit CB’s in the squad in Militão and Rüdiger, with Vallejo suffering from an overload, it will be interesting to see how ANCELOTTI tackles the challenges ahead.
